stephenconnolly
Argh! My bad!

So IBM does not have the TimeUnit class....

That's a bit of a pain!

Actually, how did it pass the TCK if it is missing those fields?

Or is the TCK missing checks for those fields?

Re: Hudson 1.216 - 1.215 regression issue

stephenconnolly
Aha!

Java 5 does not have MINUTES...

OK, this is a general regression for Java 5.

Hudson 1.216 does not run on Java 5.

I will fix later today (in about 3-4 hours time) if Kohsuke has not fixed and rolled another release

Cool!

Nice to see the agile priciple of release often at work! :-)

I'll sit tight.

Thank you.

Not that I can roll a release myself....

Note to Kohsuke, do we want to have some process for people other than you to be able to roll a release?

(Obviously we'd need a checklist before pushing the release... perhaps a vote of some sort)

OK, I've promoted the changes for this to SVN...

just need to wait for Kohsuke to roll a relase, or you can pick up a snapshot build

Stephen, do you mean just that one release doesn't run on Java 5 (because of the Java 6 TimeUnit usage), or that in general from 1.216 on Hudson won't run on Java 5?

Thanks,

Just one release. 1.217 should be JVM5 compatable again

I don't think we are forcing people to Java 6 just yet....

I don't think you can copy TimeUnit class into Hudson code base when
it's under GPL. The license is incompatible.

I'm in process of deleting it.

I've done my fair share of 1.6 dependency. It's very easy to happen
because the development requires 1.6.

It's high time we add a test for this class of errors. Does anyone know
a tool that does such a static check?

Perhaps we can copy it from the puiblic domain version for the JSR

Is the IBM VM missing something, or is this a general packaging issue?

Yes, if you have the public domain version, we can use that.

The bit that has me puzzled is that the file I copied was dual licensed under GPL & PD... not sure that's exactly legal for sun to shoehorn on the GPL to code in the PD

IANAL, but public domain is not a license, and you can pick up PD code
and slap any license you want.

IANAL, but to apply the GPL, you must own the copyright...

PD implies no copyright... therefore you cannot apply the GPL...

so yeah, you can pick up PD code and slap any license you want, but you just won't be able to enforce that license

In any case I have prompted the PD version from the PD site

Not so much a static check, but if since you're using Maven to build Hudson you could have an optional profile that runs the build against the Java 5 API.  I found these two links useful:
Java cross compiling: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/solaris/javac.html#crosscomp-example
Passing compiler arguments in Maven: http://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-compiler-plugin/examples/pass-compiler-arguments.html

And if you have a hudson building hudson then it's easy to turn this on to check all commits.

There is some part of Hudson that does depend on Java6 (otherwise we
would have compiled with JDK5 and that's it.)

So we really need a static code analyzer where we can selectively mark
some methods as "yes, this depend on JDK6" or something.

Maybe I should just write one. It's not too hard to do that.

Commenting an issue in the issue tracker?

Clemens Anhuth

Hello everyone.

I am being silly; although logged in at dev.java.net, I cannot
find how to add a comment to an issue (#848) in the Hudson issue
tracker. Can anyone tell me how to add a comment?

Bye bye

clemens
