Problem with git and hudson emails
----------------------------------

                 Key: HUDSON-5038
                 URL: http://issues.hudson-ci.org/browse/HUDSON-5038
             Project: Hudson
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: email-ext, git
Environment: Linux, Java 1.6, Tomcat 6.x
            Reporter: jpschewe

So I've got the git plugin and the extended email plugin working. Then I go and checkin code and get and error that I have a space in the email address that hudson is trying to send to. Turns out that hudson is using the user.name field from git rather than the user.email field.

Can you make sure you're using the latest git and email-ext releases (email-ext just released today) and if you still see this problem, please post the error message you receive, thanks.  Also visit the /user/{userid}/configure page for a user it attempted to email.. is there anything here in the Email address field?

As far as what's in the user's email address field, which user? The email extension is trying to email to "Jon Schewe", but my userid is jschewe. The userid jschewe has the correct email address.

@email-ext error: ya, a bug snuck in 2.3 which was fixed and released yesterday.. and wouldn't you know it, right then something went wrong with Hudson's update center scripts, so it hasn't shown up yet.. for now you can get it 2.4 here:
http://download.java.net/maven/2/org/jvnet/hudson/plugins/email-ext/2.4/

@userid: Trying to determine if the problem is in git or email-ext.. email-ext gets the Hudson User objects for committers and checks if they have an email address.
Visit your /people/ page to see User objects.. Hudson will create these on the fly, so if git said a committer was "Jon Schewe" instead of "jschewe" then you might see "Jon Schewe" listed on the people page.  In any case, check for both and see if either lists a valid or invalid email address on the configure page.

(any other devs who use git + email-ext, feel free to jump in here.. I use only email-ext, not git, so just asking some questions to collect more detail..)

jpschewe commented on HUDSON-5038:
----------------------------------

@userid: I checked "Jon Schewe" and it's got an invalid email address in there. So I'm guessing it's a bad interaction between the git plugin and email-ext. I've got my name set to "Jon Schewe" in my git config and my email set to my email address. So the git plugin should note that the committer is "Jon Schewe", but should tell email-ext to use the email address of the committer.

I'll try again once the update center is fixed.

yup, sounds like git plugin is putting the wrong value into Hudson for the email address.. email-ext is of course expecting that email to be valid.
probably git plugin won't overwrite existing data in Hudson, so you can probably fix the bad entry on the user configure page to workaround the issue for particular users until git plugin is fixed..

Furthermore, has the ext-email bug been fixed yet?

sure, email-ext 2.4 has been out for over a week.

if possible, can you test with a userid that is new to Hudson?  or, go to user/jschewe/configure and blank out the email address there and save.. then run a job with a new git change from your userid.

check the following places to see where it first goes wrong:
1) the direct git command as you did above
2) jobs/JOBNAME/builds/BUILDID/changelog.xml
3) user/USERID/configure page
4) the email that is sent by email-ext

----------------------------------

oops, my test case was bad.. "blank out email address" was not sufficient, as the git plugin only initializes the user's email address if the user did not exist in Hudson (seems like it could check if the user doesn't have an email addr set..).

retest may not be needed yet though.. first can you post the contents of:
$HUDSON_HOME/jobs/JonsInfra/builds/8/changelog.xml
(or the appropriate build dir if the "8" symlink does not exist)

hm.. everything looks ok to me.
if you delete the "$HUDSON_HOME/users/Jon Schewe" directory and restart Hudson, does the email populate ok now?

jpschewe commented on HUDSON-5038:
----------------------------------

So I went in and deleted "Jon Schewe" and "jpschewe" just to be sure. That removed my ability to login as jpschewe...

Anyway, once I removed "Jon Schewe" and then started hudson it's populated correctly. I didn't even need to force a build. Email was sent fine.

Now what is the right want to fix existing installations without removing the ability for people to login?

----------------------------------

{code}
cd $HUDSON_HOME/users
grep emailAddress */config.xml
{code}

Look through this and find any invalid email addresses.. visit those user/configure pages to fix them.
Maybe {{grep emailAddress */config.xml | grep -v @}} will help narrow down to the bad ones, assuming those don't have a "@" in them.
Let us know if we can close this issue, thanks.
