Weird build number

Miroslav Šulc
Hi,

I just noticed that my hudson (1.114) behaves really weird wrt build
numbers. I have two ant projects defined. I just noticed the problem on
one of them. New build does not started with next one higher build
number but it started with build number of build that was the last that
failed. So it should be number #46 but in fact it was #42. When I
clicked "Build Now" after the build ended, the new ebuild was assigned
#43. The other project seems to not be affected by this.

Does this problem happens consistently? Do you have any interesting plug
ins installed?

I've never heard of this problem.

Re: Weird build number

Miroslav Šulc
It just happened on the other project, though it started from #160 which
was last success. The plugins - just emma and trac.

I have also quite often problems with svn checkout, but didn't bother
with it yet.

If you can give me more details, that would be very helpful.

#175 (ok)

I have two projects defined on hudson, they both use the same repo and
the checkout is exactly the same. There was no failure on the other
project during the time the first project failed with svn commands. I
use only one executor so the projects are not built both at the same
time. These problems happened to me on several versions of hudson, the
output above is from hudson 1.116.

I hope the output is useful. If you need more info then let me know.

(The problem with weird sequence of build numbers didn't appear today
but I didn't built my projects for some time).

Re: SVN problems [was: Weird build number]

I'm not really sure what's going on. Subversion seems to be randomly
failing, more or less.

From the last "unable to delete" error, I wonder if there's another
subversion process running in parallel. Any chance you run other
programs on Hudson workspace? Anything forked in the background from the
build, perhaps?

Or do you enable svn polling? Just for the sake of isolating the cause
of the problem, can you disable it for a while to see if you still have
the same problem?

Nothing forked.

svn polling is turned on and it is performed each 10 minutes. The
failing project usually takes 13 minutes to build (according to hudson),
the not failing project usually takes 9 to 10 minutes to build
(according to hudson), so in the case of the failing project, svn
polling and build overlap. On last two builds if the failing project, I
got this:

BUILD FAILED
/var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/eas/build.xml:401: The following error occurred while executing this line:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: /var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/commons-java-lang/build.xml (No such file or directory)

BUILD FAILED
/var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/eas/build.xml:406: The following error occurred while executing this line:
/var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/commons-java-sql/nbproject/build-impl.xml:320: /var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/commons-java-sql/src not found.

So each time it failed because different file was not found. I turned
svn polling during or before (not sure) the second build started.

Hm, now I see it failed again:

BUILD FAILED
/var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/eas/build.xml:387: The following error occurred while executing this line:
/var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/commons-charts/nbproject/build-impl.xml:313: /var/lib/hudson/jobs/StartNet EAS/workspace/trunk/commons-charts/src not found.

OK, if the problem still happens when svn polling is off, then I guess
we can now exclude the possibility that polling and build are
interacting with each other.

But then I don't understand how a problem like this can happen. Let me
ask this in the svnkit users list to see if they can guess what's going on.

Re: SVN problems [was: Weird build number]

I switched to building triggered by svn repo so I'll see if there is any
change. Looking at projects history, the first project last failed on
2007-07-13 22:00:32 (#182, now #188) and the second project last failed
on 2007-07-13 22:01:23 (#64, now #67). Looking at the datetimes, they
are very close.

I ran few more builds (now #193 and #71) triggered by svn repo and no
svn failures yet.

Hmm. I guess that fits with a threory that something outside Hudson is
touching the workspace at the same time, right?

I don't think so. I didn't change anything else afaik, just reconfigured
Hudson to trigger the builds using svn repo. I think that it might be
related to svn polling or maybe some fix in the newest versions fixed
also this (as I use always the newest releases). Anyway I didn't have
that svn problem after the switch to builds triggered by svn repo yet.
